The Tigers last won the World Series in 1984.

There have been books written about how the Tigers got thir nickname some sources say it comes from the orange stripes they wore on their black stockings. George Stallings who was a Tigers Manager took credit for the name unfortunately for him the name had already appeared in newspapers before he was the manager.

Then a sports writer claims it came from him stating that their opening day victory was won with the ferocity of his alma mater the Princeton Tigers. However the Detroit Free Press stated on April 16 1895 that the ballclub had sought and received formal permission from the Light Guard to use it's trademark they were known as the 'The Tigers'.
