The Oakland Athletics are based in Oakland, California. The Athletics play in the Western Division of Major League Baseball's American League. From 1968 to the present day, they have played in the Oakland Coliseum.

The name originates from the late 19th century "athletic clubs", and the nickname commonly used is "the A's", in reference to the blackletter "A", a trademark of the team and the old Athletic of Philadelphia. The team are also known as "the White Elephants" or simply "the Elephants", the story goes that John McGraw who was the New York Giants Manager who told reporters that Ben Shibe who had a controlling interest in the team that he had a white elephant on his hands. Intead of being insulted the Team took an Elephant as the team mascot and at the start of the 1905 World Series present McGraw with a stuffed elephant. In 1963 the Missouri Mule replaced the Elephant as the team mascot but in 1988 the Elephant made a triumphant return.
