Blackjack the Game and how to play it!

If you're reading this we assume that you've never played Blackjack before. Great you've made the first wise move, never play any game until you've a basic idea of how it works, especially if you're playing for money.

Blackjack has been described as the easiest game in the world to play and the only skill needed was how much you wanted to bet. Don't believe it. Sure it's a simple game the basic idea is to get your cards as close to 21 as possible without passing 21. If you go past 21 you've bust and you're opponent has won.

The game starts with you deciding how much to gamble, then once all bets have been made you will be dealt two cards, all cards have a single value except the Ace which can be one or eleven, all picture cards are valued as 10 all other cards are face value, i.e. three = 3, seven = 7 etc. The dealer is also dealt two cards one face up the other face down, if the face up card is an Ace you have the option of purchasing insurance against BlackJack (21) (you can't beat blackjack) if you take the insurance your stake will be returned if the dealer has blackjack.

So you've got your two cards what next. There are several options open to you these are Hit (you get dealt another card.)

Stand (usually means your happy with your cards they are as near to 21 as you want to risk getting.) Blackjack is unique in that you are allowed by the house to have a choice and employ strategies. You also have some other options available besides Hit and Stand.

You could also Split if you have two cards of equal value you could split them creating two seperate hands you have to double your bet to do this but you now have two completely seperate hands giving you two chances of winning.

Right so we've made our choice with the great hand we've been dealt what happens next. Lets assume we've been dealt a 7H & 5C we decide that we want to be hit and the dealer kindly deals us 7S we now have an hand totalling 19 so we now decide to stand.

The next action is the dealer's he flips over his hole card, if he has a hand that is 17 or over he also has to stand. If his hand is less than 17 he can deal cards to himself until he has either reached 17 or beaten you, or bust. Five Rules on When to Hit or When to Stand

Rule 1. If your hand is 11 or less Hit, you can't go bust and the extra card can help.

Rule 2. Got 17 or more Stand (if the dealer is not showing 7 or higher.)

Rule 3. You've got between 12 & 16 you should stand if the dealer has an 'up' card that's likely to bust him. Hit if the dealer is showing 2 or 3 and you have 12.

Rule 4. Dealer has 7 or higher showing and you have between 12 & 16 okay you could bust yourself but the odds are with the dealer anyway.

Rule 5. got a soft ace then play more aggressively than the above suggest.
