Players wear ice skates and protective clothing, games are 60 minutes long timing stops when play is halted, the purpose of the game is to score a goal by propelling a puck into the opposing goal by use of a stick. Players are credited with a point for each goal or assist scored the player gaining the most points is declared the scoring champion

History
It’s historical roots are Canadian, although it is generally thought the game originated from a game played by the English on the frozen expanse of Kingston Harbour, Ontario in 1860. This was the first time a puck was used instead of a ball.
Montreal was the central driving force behind the early game a WF Robertson who in the summer of 1879 visited England and watched a field hockey game, being a keen skater he wondered if it was possible to transform the game so it could be played on ice. On his return to Montreal he recruited fellow student RF Smith and between them they devised the rules and regulations. this original game used a square puck and nine players per side. 1880 saw the first recognised team McGill University Hockey Club. Five years later Ottawa got it’s first introduction to this game.
Rules
Each team may have six players on the ice at one time three forwards two defenders and one goal keeper. Each team may also keep extra players on the bench to use as substitutes when players get tired, penalised or injured.
Play starts by a Face Off. the puck is dropped by the referee in the centre of the rink between the sticks of the opposing centre forwards. who must be stood one stick length apart squarely facing their opponents end of the rink. The full blade of their stick must be in contact with the ice. No other player is allowed within 3m of the two face off players. A Face off in the centre is used after a goal is scored and at the commencement of each half. Play is restarted at other times by a Face Off on the nearest of the other eight marked spots to the point at which a misplay occurs.
The puck remains in play unless it is hit over the barrier boards or when a whistle is blown for an infringement. To score a goal the puck must pass over the goal line between the goal post after being driven fairly by a stick, the whole of the puck must cross the line.
A goal is not allowed when an attacking player kicks or throws the puck into the goal or if an attacking player is in the goal crease when the puck passes over the line. Goal judges signal a goal by switching on an overhead red light behind the goal concerned.
Shut Outs this is when a goal minder concedes no goals during a match. This expression is also used to describe one of the 20 minute periods in which a goal minder does not concede a goal.
Players may stop the puck with his hand, body or skate at any time and in any position. Players can’t hold the puck for longer than 3 seconds nor push the puck forward except with his skate or stick.
Icing this is when a player shoots the puck from his own half of the ice across the opponents goal line provided it does not pass through any part of the goal crease, It is not called when a team is short handed or when a player could have touched the puck before it went over the goal line.
Two blue lines divide the playing are into the three zones defence, neutral (centre) and attacking zones. Only 3 players may be in their own defence zone when the puck is outside that zone. Players may enter the attacking zone only in line or behind the puck or puck carrier. He may not take a pass from a team mate who is, at the moment of passing in another zone. Should an attacking player precede the puck into another zone or when the puck travels over more than one line, play is halted and restarted from a face off. Offsides are determined by a players skates and not his stick.
If an attacking player is tripped or pulled down when in a scoring position in front of gaol and having no players between him and the goal unless the other player is the goal minder the referee can award a special penalty shot from the blue line of the defending team. The penalty shot is a clear shot at goal with on the the goalie able to defend. The time taken for a penalty shot is not counted in the playing time. Should a penalty be missed goals cannot be scored from the rebound.
A frantically fast game so penalty infringements are punished by being sent off for periods of time usually two or more minutes the player sent off goes to a special penalty box. Should the team with the player advantage score then the penalised player is allowed to return immediately. Should the goalie break the rules the coach can nominate any other player to leave the ice instead of the goalie.
Fighting a frequent occurrence in Ice Hockey incurs a five minute penalty if both teams get a player sent off they can bring on a substitute while the offenders are off the ice. A misconduct penalty of ten minutes is imposed for deliberately injuring or attempting to injure an opponent. In such cases substitutes are allowed for the first five minutes, but the offender cannot play in any future match before his case is heard by a disciplinary committee.
