IF you're new to Speedway you can be forgiven for not understanding what it's about.

This sport is watched by hundreds of thousands of fans worldwide and British Speedway is considered to be the best league in the world attracting the top riders from around the world. The teams consist of seven riders and each meeting consist of 15 races (lots of betting opportunities there.)

A race consist of four laps and two riders from each team compete in each heat. The winner gets 3 points second place scores 2 and the third place get 1 the last man gets 0. By the end of the 15 heats the team with the most points wins.

Team Recognition

How do you recognise the teams, well the home side wear red and blue crash helmets the away side wear green/yellow + black quarters. Riders wear jackets or jerseys with the team emblem & their number on the front.

Another point to note with speedway is a riders point tally is used as a sort of 'form guide' and can affect his team position.

Speedway Bikes - these are a breed apart powered by 500cc single cylinder engines, using fixed gears, acceleration to match Formula 1 race cars, they have NO BRAKES and suspension is virtually non existent, when you know these little facts you realise how brave these guys are when they broadside these machines on the very narrow tracks used in speedway.
