Nascar started with Drivers going out and buying a brand new car from a dealership and then racing it. In the early days this was fine but in 1947 The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR), created a set of rules for stock car racing and initiated the first system for creating a National Champion based on a set of races across the US.

Being originally run on dirt tracks that deterioted as the race progressed drivers soon discovered that the standard car couldn't hack it.

NASCAR began allowing modifications to the stock cars to increase their durability. Over the intervening years modifications have been made some for obvious safety reasons and some to increase competition.
