Water Polo
Water Polo originated in the UK around 1870 and was initially known as football in the water. The aim of the game is for the attacking side to get the ball in the net of the defending side, usually after the ball has been passed between several players.
As usual with most emerging sports the early game was primitive and rules varied from area to area. Initially there were no goals and it took a Scotsman William Wilson to suggest goal post this was approximately 1879 although initially they stood out of the water at each end of the pool. Eventually a common set of rules were agreed and these have become the basis of the modern international rules.
The game takes place in a pool with a minimum depth of 1m, although the Olympic, World and for international tournaments the water must be no less than 1.8m. the maximum distance between the goal lines must not exceed 30m the maximum width is 20m. Distinctive marks are provided on both sides of the 'field' of play to denote the goal line.
Water Polo is in the programme of most major swimming competitions except the Commonwealth Games. The game last for four periods each lasting seven minutes of actual playing time. Players may only leave the water during the two minute interval between periods or when injured or with the referees permission. Referees may suspend play for upto three minutes for accidents or injuries. Should a tie occur and a result is needed there will be a five minute break the two periods of three minutes play with a one minute break between and this will continue until a result is reached.
Scoring a goal is scored when the ball completely crosses the goal line between the post and under the cross bar - providing it has not been punched and at least two players have touched it after a start or restart (this does not include the goalkeepers attempt to save.) the team that scores the most wins.
